Book Case #77 – Burnt Tongues

Book and Author Details:
Burnt Tongues on Good Reads
Burnt Tongues on Amazon
Burnt Tongues on Medallion Publishing

Description from Author:

Transgressive fiction authors write stories some are afraid to tell. Stories with taboo subjects, unique voices, shocking images—nothing safe or dry.

Burnt Tongues is a collection of transgressive stories selected by a rigorous nomination and vetting process and hand-selected by Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, as the best of The Cult workshop.

These stories run the gamut from horrific and fantastic to humorous and touching, but each leaves a lasting impression.

Some may say even a scar.

My Review:
As a reviewer, I find it rather disheartening that an author who contributed to this anthology has gone out of their way to defensively retort a reader’s review.

I have had authors offer books for review, and then get incredibly verbal when I did not enjoy their book. I have been ripped apart in the most passive aggressive, downright stalkerish manner, because an author didn’t like my review.

One of the fantastic things about creating an “art” and putting it into the world, is that you will have fans and you will have haters. It’s not a good thing to hunt down and rally against the readers who do not enjoy your writing, the book, or your “art”.

I received advance copy of this book  and finished it a couple months ago. I have been attempting to review it. I have had it in queue for some time now, but waivered on whether I should post a review; especially after reading that one of the authors has gone out of his way to comment a reviewer’s dislike of the book. I’m almost second guessing posting it on Good Reads (where the author does the defensive attacking), on amazon and my blog.

The gist is, not everyone is going to like your book, your art, or your stories. It does not behoove an author, artist, creative type to seek out and try to debate a critic’s view point. With all of this said and done, My review is simple…

I was looking forward to this book, but found a lot of the stories a bit more out there than I had envisioned with approached to read and review it. There are some cathartic, interesting and entertaining stories in this anthology. This does not make me a crappy reviewer. This does not make me anything other than a person who wasn’t fond of this book. There are a few authors who are trying to pen their stories in the same manner that Chuck Palahniuk does, and they simply cannot surmount or mimic.

Some of the stories struck an emotional core, some of the severely bored me enough to skip through them. I read the book twice. First, I bounced around finding something that caught my eye. Second, from front to back.  My review is going to be midline, 3 stars. It just didn’t catch my attention in the manner I had hoped it would.

Experience these true accounts that will make you look closer at the antiques on your shelf . . . and wonder if that creepy doll just blinked.

My Review:

I had the blessing of reading and reviewing Stacey Graham’sThe Girls’ Ghost Hunting Guide beginning of last year. I loved the author’s quirky take on ghost hunting, her advice to a younger crowd, and how well she presented it in her book. I was completely on board when she requested that I review her new book, “Haunted Stuff: Demonic Dolls, Screaming Skulls, and Other Creepy Collectibles.”

The book starts out with an outlined description of the author’s idea of what “Haunted Stuff” means to her; tangible objects haunted or inhabiting a spirit energy. The first few chapters discussed haunted objects, types of ghosts, and running a paranormal investigation. The last remaining chapters covered anything from famous haunted creepy dolls to bridges, and everything in between.

In chapter 2, Stacey discusses types of Ghosts. She breaks it down into the common believed theories of ghost type entities. The author does a fine job of defining all encompassing theories for ghost energy. Stacey moves from ghost types to actually investigating these types of spiritual energy in chapter 3. The rest of the book is various items and locations of creepy goodness.

Haunted Robert Doll

In chapter 4, the author covers creepy dolls. I’d have titled the chapter, “Creepy Ass Dolls” but that’s my preference. Her compilation of various haunted dolls includes “Robert” and “Annabelle”. Annabelle was made famous by Ed and Lorraine Warren, and even more recently in the movie, “The Conjuring.”  The one story that I gave a huge verbal, “Oh Hell No!” to was the story of “The Island of Haunted Dolls” in Mexico.

Um Hell No!!

I would have to say that my favorite chapter within this compilation is “Dem Bones”. Stories of haunted horror surrounding bones, caverns of bones, or even catacombs such as those in; which house over 6 million dead.

The last chapter I want to mention was “Out of Pocket”; larger scale hauntings like Ghost Towns or bridges. I have actually been to the ghost town mentioned, “Garnett, MT.” I had such phenomenal experiences while in the town. I had to give Kudos to the author for mentioning it. Out of all the haunted ghost towns in the US, she mentioned one close to home.

This book is a fun, fantastic compilation of haunted objects, small enough to fit in your pocket, to big enough to house a gold rush city. I would recommend this book to any paranormal enthusiast.

Follows of this blog: YOUR stories are needed!!

Hello Haunted Travels of Michigan friends,

Kat and Bev are continuing research for their fourth book. The fourth book will deviate from their Haunted Travels of Michigan trilogy and delve into many areas of paranormal phenomena. Although this will include ghost stories, it will also expand to other areas of the unexplained. In this regard, we ask your help. If you’ve experienced/witnessed any of the below, we would love to hear from you:
The perplexing phenomena of continued consciousness. Continued consciousness includes Near Death Experiences (NDE) and past life memories. If you or someone you know has had a NDE, we would love to hear from you. If you or someone you know have memories of another life or memories that don’t seem to fit in your life experiences, please contact us.
UFOs or CRYPTIDS (sightings of unusually creatures – land or lake)
We’d like to hear from you if you have recorded and witnessed a UFO event. This needs to be a significant event that was recorded either by photograph or video.  Also, if you’ve personally seen an unusual creature or know someone who has, we’d like to hear from you.  Again, this should be more than a brief sighting but something that was of some significance to you.
There are numerous reports of an unusual shadow man people have seen most often as they awaken from sleep. Frequently, shadowman or Hat man as it is sometime called, is the image of a man wearing a cape, hunched over, a brimmed had on its head. There are other reports of seeing a shadow figure on all fours, from 3-4 feet in height, dash across the floor. This is referred to as the Night Creeper.  If you have experienced any of these OR other unexplained shadow images, please let us know.
If you’ve experienced any of the above, please email us:
SUBJECT LINE: Book 4 Experience
We hope to hear from you!

My Review and Thoughts:

Remember back when I first started this review blog, I read and reviewed a book called, “This Morning I Woke Up Dead” by Mindy Larson? Well, Mindy has released a prequel with a greater introduction to the characters in her book(s).
You can get a FREE copy on Amazon right now: The Beginning of the End.

I absolutely loved Woke Up Dead. If you recall from my review, I actually cried. Mindy and her publisher reached out to me and asked if I would want to read and review Beginning of the End. I was overjoyed and said absolutely.

Beginning is a short little novel that has a deeper introduction to the characters within Woke Up Dead. I enjoyed the deeper understanding of the pain each character has. It will definitely make Book Two (Which I am eagerly awaiting) a bit more relateable.

Mindy is a wonderfully creative author. I cannot promote her books enough. Please, go to Amazon and download her free prequel, and while you’re at it, purchase “This Morning I Woke Up Dead”. You will not be disappointed.

News article that reflects a current book.

Reading the news this morning, I came across this news article:

Swedish Doctors Transplant Wombs into 9 Women.

Totally intrigued by it, merely for the fact that I recently read Belinda Frisch’s “Fatal Reaction” I had to read the news article. It’s totally thrilling to see fictional work become reality.

Check out her book, Fatal Reaction… you will not be disappointed.
It’s only 2.99 for Kindle on Amazon. Leave a review and let them know “Haunted Book Case Sent Ya!!”
